What do you wear to an Indian wedding?

Indian Weddings are full of fun and colours in every aspect. They comprise of various different cultures and traditions with a lot of rituals. A wedding day is a dreamy one for every bride and groom since it happens once in a lifetime. Every one wishes to wear a luxury outfit for their day. Attire is an important aspect for any bride. To buy a wedding outfit, there are many things to be kept in mind like, the season, material, makeup, colours, region of origin etc.

Wedding lehengas, six- yard draped sarees and long gowns, trendy salwar suits are usually made from material like jamawar, silk, georgette, chiffon etc. These bridal outfits are ornamented with embroidery and intricate designs, which make them really eye-catching. Lehenga is a very traditional attire and nowadays, you can see most of the brides in lehengas that give them a colourful and vibrant look. Today the trend is a mix of Western and Indian culture. You can spot a lot of brides in Indo-Western look. When it comes to men, they go for long kurtas made of silk for the wedding ceremony and suits for reception.

Before taking the actual vows, Indian wedding go through a lot of functions such as sangeet, mehendi, haldi, etc. depending on the culture and tradition of different religions and regions and the outfits are worn accordingly. For Mehendi, brides opt for green, for haldi they choose yellow and for sangeet they prefer colorful outfits.

  1. Muslim Wedding – Muslim brides usually go for Ghararas, Lehengas and long Arabic gowns in royal Mughal and Nawabi styles that are usually preferred with hijabs and scarves, which cover the head of the bride.  For men it’s kurta with pajamas.
  2. Hindu Wedding – Hindu Brides go for a saree or a lehenga in the colour red which is wrapped around the waist.
  3. Punjabi Wedding – Punjabi brides wear salwar kameez with thick white and red bangles made of ivory known as a ‘chooda’ which is worn for atleast a year after their marriage.
  4. Gujrati Wedding – Gujrati brides go for a saree with its ‘Palav’ tied in the front and wrapped around their waist

When it comes to guests, they too opt for heavy anarkalis, salwar suits, designer lehengas, Ghararas, kurtis, suits, tuxedos, etc. that are decorated beautifully and come in different and elegant designs depending upon the occasions. These outfits are paired with beautiful matching jewelry and makeup and different accessories like hand bags, clutches, shoes, etc. The Indian Wedding is a grand and royal affair and people invest a lot in their outfits since it is a once in a lifetime event.
